There are cities you can visit again and again, and they always feel different. San Miguel de Allende is one of those destinations. Its cobblestone streets, terraces, galleries and unique flavors turn every walk into a new experience.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this city in Guanajuato, México brings together history, art, nature and gastronomy. If you are planning a getaway, these are some of the places and experiences you cannot miss.

1. ALLENDE GARDEN

The heart of San Miguel de Allende is the Allende Garden, a historic meeting point surrounded by restaurants and cafés. Take a few minutes to sit under the shade of its trees, enjoy a local snack and listen to local musicians.

In front of the garden, you will find the Parish of San Miguel Arcángel, easily recognized by its pink quarry stone towers. Visit it during the day to appreciate its details and come back at night, when the lighting completely transforms its façade.

2. WALK THROUGH ITS STREETS

If you are a fan of iconic photos, you will love this walk. Stroll along streets such as Aldama, Umarán, Recreo and Correo, where you will find old mansions, carved doors, small shops, galleries and patios that become the perfect postcard views.

Wear comfortable shoes. The cobblestone streets and slopes are part of the city’s charm, but the experience could be ruined if you wear uncomfortable footwear.

3. DISCOVER SAN MIGUEL’S TALENT

Visit the Artisan Market, where you will find textiles, brass pieces, ceramics, jewelry, toys and different objects made by local hands. It is a great option to take home a souvenir that truly represents the destination.

If you prefer contemporary art and design, visit Fábrica La Aurora. This former textile factory became a cultural center that houses paintings, sculptures and handcrafted pieces by great artists who live in San Miguel.

4. TRY THE LOCAL FLAVORS

Start the day with coffee and a relaxed breakfast, try enchiladas mineras or tacos de guisado, and save an afternoon to enjoy a terrace.

The city offers a wide gastronomic scene, from street food, markets and small local businesses to contemporary Mexican restaurants.

5. SEE THE CITY FROM ABOVE

Around sunset, head to the San Miguel lookout point to see how the domes, rooftops and the Parish of San Miguel Arcángel change colors with the sunlight. Another option is to choose a terrace downtown and enjoy the view with a drink.

Sunset is one of the best times to photograph San Miguel, when the quarry stone and façades take on warm tones and the city begins to light up.

6. CONNECT WITH NATURE

Just a few minutes from downtown, you will find El Charco del Ingenio, a botanical garden and nature reserve with trails, lookout points and a large collection of cacti and other Mexican succulent plants. Visit in the morning, bring water and take your time to explore it calmly.

If you like nature and history, another great option is to visit the Cañada de la Virgen Archaeological Site. As its name suggests, it is set in a ravine where you can go horseback riding, walk and, best of all, discover pyramids that once served as an astronomical observatory and lookout point for ancient civilizations.

7. VISIT THE MEXICAN SISTINE CHAPEL

You can also visit the Sanctuary of Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco, located approximately 14 kilometers from San Miguel and recognized, together with the city, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Its beauty is such that it is also known as the Mexican Sistine Chapel.
